Ayurveda is an ancient healing system that formed the foundation for today’s medical practice.
The 6000 year old medical system is based on the systemic approach of balancing one’s mind, body and spirit with the essence of nature. The word “Ayurveda” comes from the Sanskrit language and is made up of two words; ‘Ayur’, meaning life and ‘Veda’, which means knowledge, thus connoting to ‘the science of life.’
There are four Veda’s; Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva and together, they form the ancient scriptures of India. The knowledge of Ayurveda is defined in the Atharva Veda, which provides a detailed description of the diseases and injuries that plague human health and their connection to our spirituality.
We learn that healing is based on the balancing factor of our three doshas – Vata (Space and Air), Pitta (Fire and Water) and Kapha (Earth and Water) which forms our ‘Prakruti’ (constitution), developed at birth and unique to each individual. When our doshas are in a balanced state, we are full of life and radiance and free from ailments and disease.
Imbalance of the doshas is known as ‘Vikruti’, the root cause of sickness and illness. The primary goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to maintain our ‘Prakruti’, which may be disturbed by lifestyle stress, improper diet, seasonal change and other variances in our natural state. The balance of your doshas is unique to you and through tailored Ayurvedic treatment, a state of equilibrium can be achieved.
The goal of Ayurveda is to; promote longevity, prevent disease by eliminating the root cause, support your health and well-being, attain enlightenment and balance the mind, body and spirit
Ayurveda emphasises the prevention of disease through natural herbs and spices, in conjunction to yoga, meditation, Panchakarma, Aromatherapy, massage, nutrition and various special treatments. Ancient formulas consisting of natural herbs, elements and oils can cure a range of ailments from skincare and beauty to chronic illness. Through the power of nature, Ayurveda has enabled individuals around the world to achieve perfect harmony between their mind, body and spirit.
About me
Hi, I’m Dr Charu Khuller. Born in the heart of north India, the city of Chandigarh and currently residing in Sydney, Australia.
I’m an Ayurvedic specialist with over 18 years of experience in the medical industry. Qualified as a Doctor of Ayurveda from the University of Kurukshetra. I completed my BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery) in 1999, a double degree in Ayurveda and Allopathic medicine (Evidence-based medicine). I’ve worked as a practitioner for medical hospitals and as a manager for pharmaceutical companies, developing formulations for various health products. Following the completion of my degree, I was selected as a spokesperson to increase the awareness of Ayurvedic medicine around the world.
My passion for natural skincare started during my University years, after my skin experienced a serious reaction to synthetically derived ointments. I was shaken by the experience and it drove me to research Ayurvedic pharmacognosy (naturally derived medicine) and prepare my own formulations. After understanding the properties of these ingredients, I manufactured a naturally-derived herbal face pack and through consistent, daily use, my skin returned to its natural state. Having witnessed the potential of pharmacognosy, I continued to create a range of formulas and products and shared it with several family members, friends and clients for several years. When I moved to Australia in 2007, I was surprised by the falsification of naturally labelled products and the lack of regulations. This motivated me to create my own skincare range with the Ayurvedic formulas that I had refined over the years. The result is “Charu”, meaning beauty (which also happens to be my name!), an artless, homemade, purely natural and organic skincare range, completely free from synthetics, chemicals, acids, parabens and sulphates.
In line with my mission to increase the awareness of Ayurvedic medicine and procedures in Australia, I have also opened the Charu Wellness Centre. I help clients with concerns related to skincare, body, general health and weight loss. This is in conjunction to beauty procedures, detox therapy and remedial massages. All of my treatments use locally sourced, natural, herbs and oils. There is no greater satisfaction than helping my clients alleviate their issues and I am honoured to provide these treatments for them.
I strive to help educate the Australian community about the benefits of Ayurveda and am humbled by the feedback that has been received. I endeavour to continually improve my natural skincare range and refine the Wellness Centre over the years.
